GRU Director, General Pavel Bykov, had barely gotten back from his office when he got a call from an old colleague of his in the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation, or SVR. Whereas the SVR dealt with intelligence gathering on foreign soil that could deal with a threat to all of Russia, the GRU was the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. So, General Bykov was not only the Director of the GRU, he was the General of the Army and the Minister of Defense.

What had his colleague said? Officially, nothing. But surreptitiously he had given General Bykov a warning. They were coming for him. Why? Unknown.

His wife came into his office and he observed her obvious beauty. How he had been able to convince this former model to marry him was a mystery of the modern age.

“Why are you just sitting there?” his wife asked.

He had reluctantly told his wife that someone was coming for him, but he didn’t know which organization. Or why they were doing so. Perhaps President Anton Zima wanted to speak with him for some reason.

The general raised both hands and said, “What would you have me do? Should I run away like a little school girl? We have no idea if my old friend is even right.”

She paced the room with her arms crossed over her chest. “Of course, we can’t be certain. What have you done to anger those in the General Staff?”

That was the problem. He had been racking his brain for the past hour trying to figure that out. The general said, “Perhaps it has to do with losing one of my men in the Caribbean. Or, even more likely, the shooting death of two American FBI agents.”

“Oh my,” she said, and then bit her finger nail. “Could this have to do with our daughter? She is there with Niko. What if something has happened to her. . .and her baby.”

He had not even considered that option. But he said, “I don’t think so. My man didn’t sound like Olga was involved with what is to come. Our man on the ground there reported back that the FBI shot first. That their actions were justified. We lost one man and they lost two agents, a man and woman. I should not be telling you this. It is highly classified.”

“When it comes to my daughter and future grandchild, nothing is beyond my need to know,” she assured him.

If he ever wanted to sleep with this former beauty queen, he needed to simply nod and smile.

“Have you talked with Olga?” she asked.

“There is a chain of command.”

“Not between a father and daughter.”

After great reflection, he said, “I texted her.”

“Saying what?” she asked.

“To be sure, I told her to abort her mission and make herself scarce.”

His wife put her hands on her hips and pushed her breasts out toward him like weapons. “You told her to run? Yet, you sit here and do nothing?”

“I sit here because I am the GRU Director and a general in the Russian Army,” he said.
